Laravel vs WordPress: Which Is Right for Your Business Website?

If you are planning a new website, you will probably hear two names: WordPress and Laravel. Both are built on PHP and both power serious business websites, but they suit different needs. This guide compares them in plain terms so you can choose with confidence.

The short answer

WordPress is a content management system. It is the right choice when your website is mainly pages, blog posts and forms that your team wants to update themselves.

Laravel is a framework for building custom web applications. It is the right choice when your website needs to do things, such as customer accounts, bookings, dashboards, quoting tools or complex integrations, that go beyond what plugins handle well.

Editing content

WordPress wins here. Its editor is familiar to many people, and once the site is built your team can add pages and posts without a developer.

A Laravel site can also have an admin area for editing content, but it is built specifically for your site. That can be an advantage when you want a simpler editing experience with only the fields your team needs, but it has to be designed and built as part of the project.

Custom features

WordPress extends through plugins. For common needs such as contact forms, SEO settings and newsletter sign-ups, a well-supported plugin is fast and cost-effective. Problems start when a site depends on many plugins to behave like an application. Each plugin adds updates to manage and possible conflicts.

Laravel is designed for custom logic. Features are built to match your process exactly, and the code is organised so it can grow without the site becoming fragile.

Speed

Both can be fast. WordPress sites slow down most often because of heavy themes and too many plugins, not because of WordPress itself. A lean custom theme with a short list of plugins performs well.

Laravel sites include only what you build, which makes it easier to keep them fast as they grow, especially for pages that pull data from a database.

Security and maintenance

WordPress is very widely used, which makes it a common target. A WordPress site stays secure when its core, theme and plugins are updated regularly and unused plugins are removed.

A Laravel site has a smaller surface to attack because it contains only your code and the packages it needs. It still needs maintenance, including framework updates and security patches, but there are usually fewer moving parts.

Cost of building and changing

For a standard business website, WordPress is usually quicker to build, because much of the structure already exists. Laravel usually takes more development time up front, because features are built for you.

Over time the picture can change. If you keep adding features that WordPress plugins do not handle well, each change gets harder. With Laravel, adding features to a well-structured application tends to stay predictable.

Which should you choose?

Choose WordPress if:

  • your site is mainly service pages, a blog and enquiry forms;
  • your team wants to publish and edit content often;
  • you want a proven setup quickly.

Choose Laravel if:

  • your site needs customer logins, bookings, dashboards or custom workflows;
  • it has to connect closely to your CRM, ERP or other systems;
  • you expect the website to grow into a product or platform.

If your main goal is selling products online, look at Shopify too. It handles payments, checkout and hosting for you.

Still not sure?

The right platform depends on what your website needs to do in two or three years, not just at launch. Tell us about your plans and we will recommend the option that fits. See our WordPress development and website development services, or get a free consultation.
